You have picked up swimming regularly, but after a workout you’re really hungry, Here is how to recover! Before you get in the water, you should have something light to eat. I would recommend something light and easy to digest. I usually have a piece of fruit or a piece of toast with peanut butter. But honestly, that is just the appetizer; The true refuel is the main course. This week I had a bagel with peanut butter on it. Sometimes you just need the extra calories and, you know what? That is ok. You had a hard workout; you earned a good recovery.
Another good trick is to pack something in your bag. Trail mix and a piece of fruit would be a great start. I like fruit because it’s pretty easy to throw in your bag. No prep time makes it so easy. If you have time after your workout and a kitchen nearby, I aim for toast with avocado and a sunny side up egg (or egg to your liking). Its got the protein from your eggs and a little bit of healthy fats from the avocado. I’m no expert on nutrition, but it’s all about making healthy choices to refuel the beast.
My last and final tip is to purchase a reusable water bottle. You never realize how much you sweat in water because you’re sweating in the water, you just don’t know it. Trust me, it’s hot on the pool deck or outside when you're swimming, so make sure to have some water on hand when you workout. Then refill the bottle as needed. I’m telling you, there is nothing more satisfying than an ice cold bottle of water after a challenging workout. If you get bored of water put some fruits, vegetables, or herbs in your water. I enjoy water alot but sometimes you just need to change it up. This is where the varieties come into play; it’s very refreshing but has a little bit of flavor. They say you're supposed to drink 8 cups of water, so buy that water bottle and have fun trying a few different combinations.
