Why Should Someone Learn How to Swim?

There are many reasons why it is important to know how to swim. There are many avenues in which we can use swimming in our daily life and this why swimming is such an important skill to learn. When I first started teaching lessons, I looked at it as a solely a fitness activity, but now I realize it is so much more than that.

The main and most important reason to know how to swim is because it keeps us safe. The earth is covered in water so, no matter what age you are, you should feel comfortable in the water.  In some areas of the world they have seasonal floods, so if anything were to happen those people would like to prepare for the worst. It’s better to have the knowledge and not need it than to need the knowledge and not have it. In the United States certain parts of the country get hit by floods and hurricanes. While we try to prepare as best we can, not everyone can prepare for the situation at hand and that’s why knowing how to swim is important.

Another great reason to learn to swim is the fitness aspect. Swimming is a great workout. It provides you with a strong core and a great cardiovascular workout. Oh and you can’t forget about the toned arms and legs. There's also many opportunities in the USA to compete. By doing this, you build confidence, it helps you make friends and have a ton of fun in the process. Swimming and water aerobics are great for the older population as it is low impact on your joints. Even if you only put it in your workout routine once a week, it’s a great way to change up your daily workout routine.

And if none of these reasons has convinced you, do it for the adventure and thrill of it. There are so many great activities that you can partake in that have swimming attached to it. Some include travel, the beach, water parks, canoeing, and the the list can go on and on. You as a person can choose what you like to do, but you would be missing out on a lot of fun if you don't know how to swim. Swimming relaxes me and tends to bring out the best in people, so if you have the opportunity to learn and partake in the fun, please do it!
